  1. lol, i heard that washing your hair too often can take away valuable oils, some shampoo have amonia in it, which is not good, i heard tresseme and pantene have it.

umm i didn't wash my hair for a week and it turned out very nasty, it was very oily and looked like i put a lot of gel in my hair or i just showered :P never did that again :P

  2. Well, I don't know about going extended periods of time without washing your hair. However, it is true that your hair produces natural oils, and if you wash it every single day, then it will dry out your hair and scalp. I usually wash my hair with shampoo and conditioner every other day to ensure that it doesn't lose natural moisture.

  3. i went for 4 days. i couldnt stand it any longer. my head just felt dirty

  4. yuck just thinking bout not washing my hair is disgusting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ew!!!

  5. it gets greasin and "cleans itsels" but it starts to look nasty and oily

  6. Somebody told me that you should not wash your hair everyday for the same reason you are talking about. They said every other day or something. But I guess it is ok if you wash with expensive shampoo.

  7. No thats a myth.

  8. i went camping (like actual camping, in the back country with no tent... that kinda camping) for like 5 weeks, and in that time- i didnt wash my hair- but i went swimming in a river..

i heard that too, but you have to make sure you comb your hair evenly before it will get to the phase where it doesnt need washed. keep in mind, it might start to stink after a while!

  9. Hair produces oils to keep the hair moist, not to clean it.

Shampoo can dry the hair out, so yes, you can "wash" your hair with conditioner if you like.

The longest I have gone without washing my hair was two weeks with extensions (which i hated) and one week without them.

  10. Its true that your hair will eventually become oily from not washing it, but it wont clean itself.  If you let it go without washing it for a really long time, it might even start to feel like its drying out, but its not "cleaning" itself.      It also depends on what type of hair you have to decide how often you need to wash it.  Shampoo is definitely not bad for hair (except like someone said about ammonia being in certain brands- yeah that is bad).  Shampoo cleans the hair and takes out the excess oil that has built up, as well as any product build-up.  Shampooing is only damaging when it is done too often, not allowing any of the natural oils from your scalp to build up, therefore drying your hair out (and your scalp).  If you decide to wash your hair only once or twice a week, definitely shampoo it more than once.  The dirtier the hair, the more work you will need to put into shampooing.  Give yourself a really good scalp massage, almost scrubbing, and then rinse and do it again.  Your shampoo should lather really nicely the second time, and if it doesnt, do even a third shampoo.  Some people also make the mistake of adding more shampoo if it doesnt lather, when really you need to add more water on your hair.  For me, my hair is pretty thick and also coarse and therefore usually pretty dry.  I wash it about every 3 or 4 days, and when I do, I shampoo at least twice, making sure I scrub really well.  I would estimate that I spend about 10 minutes on my shampooing.  The secret is to really clean your scalp, not your hair.  If you concentrate mostly on your scalp and run the lather through your ends, you will end up with a good oil balance.  After rinsing the shampoo really well I use a moisture conditioner or a strengthening conditioner.  And contrary to popular belief, you should always rinse your conditioner thoroughly and not leave any in (unless it is specifically a leave in conditioner).  Leaving conditioner in your hair will only weigh it down, and contribute to faster oil buildup.  And definitely invest in a salon quality shampoo and conditioner (like go into a nice salon and ask them to help you choose based on your hair type.  If it is a reputable salon with knowledgeable stylists, any of them should be able to help you).  Alot of the store bought ones that claim to be salon quality are definitely not - and some of the salon brands you see in regular stores are there illegally anyway (but thats another story).  I mean you never would go into a nice salon and see them using Pantene right?  I hope I was helpful and good luck with your hair!!  Oh by the way I am a hairstylist so I think this info is pretty accurate from my own experiences!
