(so you have the shoulder belt fastened but NOT the lap belt) then can you get a ticket for not wearing a seat belt if a cop were to see you?

(I live in FL if that makes a difference)

  1. Seat belts must be properly worn. This includes both belts. If only one is secured, that is illegal.

I can tell you from experience if you don't secure the lap belt, and are involved in a crash, your upper body will remain with the seat, and your knees will be slammed into the dash so hard you may never walk again. You are also more likely to spinal injuries, as your backbone does not remain secure in the seat.

That type of belt became popular when the Federal government was pushing for passive restraint systems. Auto makers saw that as a cheaper alternative to the air bag. However, once they found out the lack of a lap belt was creating a more severe injury, they stopped making them.

  2. Most laws - state properly fastened and adjusted seat belt - this does not qualify.

Most seat belt laws are similar from state to state.

Your seat belt is not worn properly - and it does little for safety.

  3. Your best answer is going to be from the police department. Call and ask.
