If you drive to work, do you think 45 miles is out of the question? It's about 55 minutes one-way.?

Do you know anyone who puts up with long commutes and many hours in the car every day?

This has less to do with the higher price of gas, but more about the tradeoffs between a better job and the cost of switching jobs.

  1. I used to drive an hour and 15 minutes each way.

The money I made on the job was far more than I would have made locally, so I went for it.  I did that for about 5 years, and used the skills I refined there for my own business.  Got more out of it than I expected so it was well worth it.  Daycare was a pain though, and being out of town when the kids were in school here was a scary thing at times.

  2. I drive about 45 minutes each way to work if I speed at 120km/hr (im in canada). Is it worth it???? For me..yes. Im a RN and would recieve the same pay closer to home but the job is completely diffrent. I enjoy being an oncology nurse and dont want to work in the town I live in. Its best for my partner and my daughter to be in this small town...so I commute. Do I like the commute? NO! I hate being up at 530am and I hate getting home at 9pm (I work 12hr shift work). I dont mind so much in the morning but the drive home is a killer. Also the gas prices and car maintence get to me....but its worth it for now.

If the job is better for you finacially or experience wise I would say go for it. The thing is if you hate it you can quit or transfer or move closer to your new job. GIve it a shot. It might not be so bad.

  3. Call it an hour each way, door to door. You're going to spend 2 hours driving to work and back and a minimum of 8 hours at work call it 9 to show you are committed to the company. You need 1 hour to get up and have breakfast before you leave and 1 hour for an evening meal when you get back, assuming you don't also have to cook it. You will need 8 hours sleep to avoid tiredness and catching up at the weekend. This leaves you three hours a day to do your own thing, and don't forget all the jobs that need doing in the week so your weekend is free.

I did a 1.5 hour commute twice a day and it got old really fast. I felt like all I did was eat, sleep drive and work. I would not recommend anything over 45 minutes each way it's too much unless the job/pay is worthwhile.

  4. I drive 45 min. to and from work every day.  I must drive on the interstate so I can't drive 45 mph unfortunately.  However, I do drive the speed limit which is 60 mph.  Most others drivers pass me at 70-80.  If you drive over 60, you burn 20% more gasoline so I play it safe and only drive 60 saving gas and also preventing getting a ticket and paying for that too.  :-)

  5. I would not agree unless the commute insured me at least $200 a day 5 days a week.

  6. Second person is right. If the money is worth it, than go for it. Me personally I hate driving so I probably would not...but if the rewards from the job switch are worth it GET THAT MONEY!!

  7. I work with a few people who do similar didtances each day in the UK.

It's getting more expensive day by day !!
