  1. No it wouldn't break because diamonds are the hardest substance in the world besides your mom.


  2. The bottom of the ocean is maybe at a pressure of, what, something like 1 kilobar or so?

    Diamonds form under pressures of 50 kilobars, or so.

    I don't think the crystal structure would break under that sort of ambient pressure anyway, but I think the diamond would in any case be safe.

  3. No, like he said, it is infact the hardest substance known to man.  They've actually dont tests like this with different substances to see how much it can withstand.  Not the ocean necessarily, but with enormous amounts of pressure, equal or higher to that of the oceans.

  4. It would be under tremendous pressure but, assuming that the diamond did not have any internal defects that would lead to a fracture, the diamond would not break.  Diamond is the hardest substance known so it would not be crushed.
