If you found £4,000 in a bag at a bus stop would you keep it ?

A North East man who found a bag at a bus stop in Newcastle containing £4,000 was honest enough to hand it in to the police. My question is what would you do ?

At this precise moment in time yes I would keep it - finders keepers, it would be a Godsend.  If somebody left it there then it couldn't have meant much to them, unless it was a pensioner's life savings.  I would hang on to it and keep an eye on the news and hand it in if somebody appealed for it.  Otherwise I would assume it was drug money or something and would keep it.

Depends I need the money or not, if I am ok I turn it in. If I can't afford the next meal, I keep it.

I'd hand it in without question.  

If I kept it I'd spend my time thinking of who lost it.  Was it some old body's life savings?   Was it a young couple's money that they'd saved for their wedding?  Was it cash that someone had saved hard for to give their sick kid the holiday of a lifetime?

I couldn't live with myself for worrying.

Yes, because if it isn't claimed, after 6 months the police ring you and say that you get to legally keep it.

My mum found a very expensive diamond ring, handed it in and 6 months later the police said she could have it.

Rarely do people claim stuff back, so you have a good guilt free way of getting it eventually!  In any case you might get a reward.

I probably would hand it in to the Police. It would then be up to the claimant to convince the Police that he was the genuine owner for he money.

no i would hand it in because you dont know where is came from - some nasty drug dealers could come looking for you.  if it is not reunited with its owner after i think 3 months it is legally yours!

Your question is what would I do.  I would wonder how the (former) owner of the money would go about proving it was his, possibly furnishing the serial numbers of the notes, for example.  But...

Any normal person would be tempted to keep it,but i would still hand it in.I wouldn't be able to enjoy it because of the guilt.Btw.it is illegal under UK law,(stealing by finding).
