  1. Not all cable channels transmit yet in HD.

So, you get a mix of SD and HD.

  2. Why don't you just ask Charter? Only the channels they choose to broadcast in HD wil BE in HD. There is nothing requiring them to broadcast every channel in HD. The only place to get the specific details you are asking for is from Charter. I am curious as to why you think asking this question here will get you an answer that you can't get or will be better than going directly to the source? From Charter?

  3. Not all channels at this time are in HD...you will get probably 30-50 HD channels....although alot of them are worthless....they are adding more all the time though.

  4. first to Rowlfe, this is a question that can be answered here because it is not localized to charter or any other cable company, its a pretty basic question that people not really familiar with HD would ask or have misconceptions about. Your line of thinking could apply to any question asked in Yahoo answers, like why not just look it up on the internet somewhere, the answers has to be out there right? Its easier to come here and get a more precise answer, so stop being a grouchy old man and sit back and you may learn a few things. Also your answer is  wrong, they don't choose to broadcast in HD, they choose to carry an HD channel, that channel will choose to broadcast in HD or to upconvert to HD but the cable company has nothing to do with choosing what program on a specific channel will be in HD or not.

Not every channel is HD. There are specific channels for HDTV. There is NBC, and then there is NBCHD, Even if you have an HDTV but you are watching just regular NBC you will not be seeing anything in HD, it will just be in regular old standard definition. Also not every program on an HD channel may be in HD. Standard definition uses an aspect ratio of 4x3, HD uses an aspect ratio of 16x9. SO though you may be watching the HD channel you may see black bars on the left and right of the picture, thats because its a standard def signal upconverted to HD on the HD channel. TBSHD upconverts the regular standard signal to make it HD, and then stretch the picture to fit the HD aspect ratio which really looks horrible because everything just looks smooshed. The standard def channels will be digital but not in high definition. So not every channel is HD only the ones labeld with "HD" on the end of them.
