Question:

If you get a Master's degree while teaching public school, does it have to be in Education?

I have a B.A. in English and plan to teach elementary or middle school. I want to do a Master's at some point (maybe six months into teaching, maybe a year into it, don't know yet). But the thing is, I don't necessarily want to do it in Education. I want to do it in English. I hear of teachers going back to school for their Master's because it would increase their pay, etc, or just make them more qualified/marketable, etc. But I assume that means a Master's in Education. If I were to do a Master's in English even though it'd make sense to do it in Education, would that still be considered an 'upgrade' to schools, etc.?

  1. If you already have a teaching degree, it doesn't mater what you get your Masters in.

  2. Check with your school district's requirements ...........some will not pay you for a master's degree in a non education-related field.

  3. Increase in pay is usually based on the units beyond your degree and not the major.  Sometimes, having a master's is considered for even more pay than just extra units and doesn't depend on the major.  If you were interested in an administrative position,  a masters in education may be preferable to English.  It might be wise to check the requirements in the state in which you wish to teach since states can vary .
