Or are the pre-existing conditions not covered and you have to pay for that care out of pocket? Is it better to stay at a job once you have a pre-existing condition just to keep yourself totally insured?

  1. HIPAA laws allow you to transfer from company to company for that very reason so long as you haven't had a 63 day break in coverage and you've had continuous coverage.

  2. Usually group insurance through an employer already accounts for pre-exisitng conditions. To verify this find out if you are required to have an insurance physical. Chances are you won't so you will be covered.

  3. Federal law prohibits insurance companies from excluding coverage for preexisting conditions, as long as you have had "creditible" coverage for the last 12 (generally) months with no break in coverage greater than 63 days. See link below.

Note: The rule applies only to group policies.

  4. If the lapse in coverage between the old policy and the new is less than 63 days, AND you have 12 months of continuous prior coverage, then the pre-existing conditions will be covered.

You can safely move from one job to the next, if you can take cobra between plans, or if there's no wait for insurance at the new job.
