It really depends on the strength of the punch.  The former heavyweight champion, Max Baer once got hit in his adam's apple and he could not breathe right for a little while.  He obviously did not die, but you can be assured that it hurt like h**l.

depend on how strong the punch is, if it's really that strong then it would damage the windpipe killing the person by suffocation!

Yeah I would think it would crush their windpipe.  Even if it didnt kill them some states have felony charges or attempted murder when you hit a person in a certain spot depending on the danger of it.  Those are way worse than just punching someone like in the arm and getting charged with assault.

actually i love this question.

The adams apple can have two different effects that you have to be aware of.

If you hit someone there with a rounded surface, with a light touch...say like a fist...the throat will bend, collapse....they will knockout.

BUT....if you hit the adams apple with a sharper, harder surface it is irreversible. Two reasons...one it will break off...but it is somewhat of a bladed edge when it breaks free. The persons first instinct is to try to swallow....to clear their throat to breathe. Aas they swallow they will force the bone down their throat, cutting it on both sides.

Basically, even with a paramedic there, you couldnt start a tracheodomy to save them...there would be nothing substantial to pierce.

Its not the adams apple that matters its just hitting someone hard in the throat itself, which can if very very hard crush the windpipe.

generally people in a brawl or even boxing match may take a few punches there. it is not very pleasant but just another sort of punch mostly.
