Question:

If you got ringworm and you think it is from a cat, what do you do?

My daughter got a small ringworm on her chest by her collar bone. We have 7 outside cats/kittens at the moment. I am pretty sure she got it from them by hugging them up to her throat. I have medicine for my daughter, but what do I do about the cats? Taking 7 to the vet just isn't a reality. I can't see any sores on any of them. Is there a home remedy? Or a shampoo for ringworm? Any ideas?

Thanks

  1. If one cat has them, they might all have them. Take one in to the vet and have it tested. You can tell the vet what happened, and he/she can probably prescribe enough medications for all the cats.

  2. Ringworm can come from many things, but chances are it was the cats if they are outside cats.  Even if you don't see active lesions on them, they could have the spores (ringworm's a fungus - it spreads through spores) on their fur, and she could get it against her skin and become infected.  Ringworm tends to be the disease of the young and the immune suppressed - you don't normally see it in a healthy adult (cat or human).  It's really hard to treat an outdoor cat - the fungus lives in the ground, and as fast as you clean them up, they can pick it back up again.

  3. Sulfur dip. A few years ago one of our cats was carrying ringworm and both my brother and I had it. So all six or seven of our cats received sulfur dips, my brother and I received topical meds and everything cleared up.
