You can go a little over...

I was thinking:

Driver: Nike SQ Sumo (2) $300

Irons: Nike Golf- Slingshot OSS 4-AW Irons Steel (+1/2 Inch, 2° Upright) $390

Fairway Woods: ??? taylor made? which model?

Putter: ??? titleist? which model?

Bag: Nike - Xtreme Sport II Carry Bag $100

I am a beginner and this is my first set, but I want clubs that can last me a while. Thanks for your help.

  1. the only titleist putter is scotty camerons... and the cheapest model is $300. and as far as the irons, driver, and fairway woods go, just demo them. I personally hate sumos, but i have friends who love them and hit them well. it depends.

demo. thats what you have to do.

  2. my suggestion: go to www.golfdigest.com and refer to their HOT LIST 2008.  Go to the super game improvement category and pick a set of irons from there, I think right now it's the Adams Idea OS3 irons, it's a mix of hybrids and super forgiving irons.

A very popular putter is the odyssey 2 ball, and there are many versions of it, but it is a very good putter.  I personally have a Scotty Cameron Newport (@$300), the odyssey you should be able to get for a little over $100.

Ultimately, you need to go to a shop that will allow you to hit the clubs on the range.  The best for me will not likely be the best for you.  Tiger is the best player on tour, but the average player will not be rewarded for buying his clubs, they are very difficult for a bogey-golfer to hit.

Bags are completely personal preference too, just make sure you get the double-strap stand bag (virtually all bags have this)  Spending more money just gets you a cooler logo, it's not like it will help your game any.

    Hope this helps!

  3. First of all you need to get fitted for all your clubs. Most pro shops will do this for free if you are buying from them and places like GolfSmith fit you as well.

Driver is all personal preference but the Nike is good, TM TourBurner is good. Take a look at a line that hasn't caught on yet here but hits great Srixon. They have a nice Driver.

Irons-Stay away from Nike they don't last. I'm a big fan of the new Titleist AP1 line for midhandicappers. For beginners Adams has a nice set that is a hybrid set.

Fairway woods-If you have a two and three hybrid you really don't need fairway woods.

Putter Odyssey two ball is classic. Scotty Cameron is the best but just starting out it's probably too much club for most. Make sure you get the right length.

    Bag doesn't matter.

Ball however, does. Find a course with a launch monitor and test out different balls. Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x are the standard but Bridgestone 330 and 330s are great. So are Bridestone e6+.

    Hope it helps

  4. Long answer:

First I buy them used so I would go to a local golf shop and test out the top of the line golf clubs such as Nike, Taylor Made, Callaway, etc. (personal favorite store: Golfsmith)

Chances are, the brand for your driver may vary from the brand of irons and wedges. When you found what you want, go online, such as globalgolf.com or http://callawaygolfpreowned.com/default.... or http://www.golfsmith.com/po/ and buy them used but make sure they're in almost new or mint condition. If they don't have it, there's no choice but to buy from rockbottomgolf.com since they got some of the best prices in golf clubs and if you don't mind taxes, you can even buy from golfsmith.com.

Whatever you do, NEVER ever tell the salesman that you have $1000 to spend on golf clubs. Yes he will give you the best set under $1000 but I can get you the best and maybe the same set for less.

I use Cobra drivers, MacGregor irons, Wilson SW and MacGregor LW, Dunlop putter and my games are very consistent. If I were to play hardcore and competing with others, I may buy more expensive golf clubs but since this is for recreational purposes and fun, I don't need top of the line but yes, I do recommend buying high rated golf clubs.

  6. I'd keep my current clubs and put the money towards another LCD TV.

  8. Honestly, if you already have decent clubs that you could get 3 more years out of, I would put that money towards some lessons. Lessons are a great investment and can instantly shave strokes off your score. If you NEED new clubs now, get a decent brand and GET FIT. It is worth the money.

  9. there are so many possibilities...

i'll atleast say go used. Definately go used. its not worth the extra money for new.

also those nike irons...have u been fitted? you don't want clubs that are not fit for you. go to a shop, demo some clubs, and get fitted. any competent shop will be able to help u better than a buncha ppl on the internet going thru a catalog. Go hit them for yourself and find out which are best for YOU. :)

  10. Since I just bought a new set at the first of the year and spent around $1000, I can offer personal insight.

    Driver: Nike Sasquatch SQ2 - $200

    3 wood: Nike Sasquatch - $150

    Irons: TaylorMade RAC OS2 3-PW - $300

Wedges: TaylorMade RAC 56 and 60 - $75 (barely used)

    Putter: SeeMore MFG - $150

Bought a generic bag to put it all in and then bought tees, balls, a towel, etc.  I also carry a Mizuno 2-iron that was given to me years ago.  I got out for around $980 and I'm pretty happy with it.

  11. I will Purchase this,

    = Mizuno MP60 Irons

    = Taylor Made r7 460 Driver

    = Titleist 904F 3 Wood

= Odyssey White Hot 2 Ball Putter

    = Ping Hoofer

  12. Putter: Scotty Cameron Studio Select 1.5

  13. Wow, good question. $1000 isn't enough for my dream set though.

    D: Nike Sumo ( the round one ) 9.5  $300

    FW: Nickent 4DX 3W  $140 ( have now )

HY: Cobra Pro 3 hybrid   $165

IR:  Cobra Carbon CB ( have now )  $680

    W: Srixon W-706 ( have now )  $125  (set of 3)

    P: Odyssey 2 Ball 33"  (have now )  $160

  14. You're going to get a different answer from everybody who replys to your question.  My preferences lean toward Taylormade products.   Burner driver and fairway woods, Rac 2 irons and Odessy putter is what I carry.  I'm considering buying new XD irons.  Nike makes a good product as well.  Calloway, Ping and titelist are also good products.  You need to try them first before buying.

  15. my dream clubs:

    Driver: Taylor Made r7 Quad

Irons: Cleveland cg black pearls (the clubs i have and love)

Fairway Wood: i swear on my V steels!!! the greatest fairway woods ever

    Putter: Oddysey white hot #2

but for you being a beginner the driver and irons would work. for drivers it's all in the feel. its completely up to you. as for irons, beginners should get cavity backs like the nike slingshots. those are probably going to be the easiest irons to hit on the market. extremely forgiving but impossible to work. other irons that suit beginners very well are callaway (x-16 kind of irons not the forged ones) and ping are very easy irons to hit and great for beginners. as for fairway woods i would suggest v steels simply from experience but once again its how they feel to you. theyre only $90 a club or something like that. as for a putter i absolutely hate titleist putters! they are the most overrated piece of equipment you can get. they charge $300 for a club i wouldnt pay $20 for just because it has the name scotty cameron on it. complete waste of money. test out different putters and see which ones you like. mallet or blade, and the different shafts they have. hope i helped good luck with golf.
