What kind of class would YOU teach if you are not ALREADY a teacher? SO I guess this is for mostly Non teachers though they can answer too.

  1. I believe in application of techniques, not brawling in spite of them!

When I teach group classes, I do like to concentrate on sparring, whether it be continuous (full contact), ground-fighting, push hands, or half speed/no gear, with and without weapons. Having an entire class on this would be irresponsible, though; one must stretch and warm-up properly to avoid self injury. Also, precision techniques as done in forms or drills are best performed prior to sparring to avoid sloppy technique due to fatigue.

In essence, warm-up/stretch, drills/forms, sparring, then cool down is the standard I go by, but I mix up the drills/forms and sparring a bit to keep interest. Classes can include weapons and last anywhere from an hour to four hours.

  2. We occasionally will devote one hour to sparring. Not every class Our classes are only an hour long.

  3. My classes are 3 hours long so if I had them spar for 3 hours they would be crawling limping or carried out the door.

I get them nice and tired for 2 hours with 2 man drills (not 3 steps or 2 steps I pitched that nonsense long ago)and kata/self defense then the last hour is spent on sparring

Why sparring last? When they are tired they think less and act/react more by instinct.

  4. I generally follow this order: basics, kata, weapons, technique theory and application, short forms (two man bunkai), kata interpretation, form sparring, bag work, free sparring (including multiple attacker and today's weapons), chi kung.

My classes last anywhere from two to four hours, depending on what people want to do.

  5. 2.5 hour classes

    standing grappling technique for 45

    Grappling technique for 45

    Randori for 1 hour
