  1. just spent 18 days in Vietnam a week ago. Spend two/three days in Saigon. If you are going for the beaches stop at Mui Ne.  We didnt have time for Dalat but heard good things. Nha Trang is a must, spend at least 4 days if you like the beach, make sure you do the boat cruise with snorkling. From Nha Trang to Hoi An, you only need about 2/3 days there. If you are getting clothes made get them here and do it on the first day as you will need a few fittings. Next stop Hue and you only need 2 days to see it all.  Do a motorbike tour around the town.  Hanoi is next which deserves at least three days.  More importantly north of Hanoi is Sapa.  My favourite place in Vietnam and a must if you want to experience the hill tribes and awesome scenery.  Once back in Hanoi head northwest to Ha Long bay.  Both these places are fantastic and shouldnt be missed.  Have a great holiday....

  2. From north to south: Langson, Hanoi, Haiphong, Halong Bay, Hue, Da Nang, Dalat, Nha Trang, Vungtau, Saigon, Mytho, Cantho, &  Soc Trang.

You may not probably have enough time to spend more than 1 day in 1 particular city ; So, if I were you, I'd definetely spend more quality time in Hanoi*, Halong Bay* (a "must"), Hue*, Nha Trang, Dalat & Saigon*.

(*it's got to be at least 2 or more days here).

  3. i thought i answered this question in great detail yesterday ??? what happened??... ok , short version: stay in back pack area [de tham / pham ngu lau streets]in sai gon. plenty of cheap rooms 7- 30 dollars look before you "buy"] i like the dong phuong[oriental] on the corner next to "allez boo" bar . its more expensive [$12]but has its" perks".1-2 days take a 1-2day tour[ mekong is better than cuu chi] check out the bars in the evening markets during the day ... train/ plane to nha trang [ dong phuong hotel on nguyen thien thuat street] 5-6 days there beach, clubs, resturants and city tour. off to hoi an,[1-2nights] shopping, great food beach, marble mt, my son... bus to hue, boat and old city tour.2days  train to ha noi, old city[pho cuu] ho hoan kim district ,stay away from water puppets, but the resturant across the lake [all lit up] is great ...make resevation... if you have time 1-2 day trip to my chau vally, chua hong, or ha long.... always get a sleeper on the train.. soft births have ac but closed or no windows, hard birth.. buy a blankek or mat to take with you... its not bad.. you have a better chace of getting a private car if you go soft birth....oh the best place to change money is at the sai gon air port [ask someone when you get in] have $100 or your travelers checks handy when you land so you dont have to go hunting for them at the counter... you will get your best vaue there  and you'll get by for days , maybe a week on $100. alow a day to travel between sai gon /nha trang..&. hue/ ha noi.. also nha trang /da nang[ hoi an] unless you take a plane.... from anyplace in da nang to hoi an... take a motor bike if you dont have too much bagage... otherwise a taxi... 50,000 i believe is the going rate on both.. its a 1 hr ride... the "short version" lol!! i can talk about vn all day long...

  4. I would follow Ong Jon's travels for a few days because I think it would be exciting to hang around with him in Vietnam.

I would eventually give up the backpacking venture, send for my girl in Ha Noi, turn into a tourist w***e and stay at a nice hotel in Nha Trang, Da Nang, Hue and Don Hoi for a few days each so we can enjoy the exquisite romantic atmosphere that those places have to offer.

In between the romance, I would pig out on pho, ban cuon, goi cuon and seafood until my sides burst.

We would eventually find our way to a train station and rail the rest of the way to Ha Noi. This is to keep me out of prison because I almost beat the crud out of a couple snotty communist officers in Vien City.

  5. I suggest you ask some tourist company here in Vietnam for advice coz they know clearly where you should go & where not (e.g. Saigontourist Holding Company)

If you wanna go alone, it'll be difficult to communicate with local people as well as to know which places r worth visiting. The above ppl gave you best advice( I think ). Just follow what they said coz they have much experience in this as far as I know.

Don't forget to pass by some famous places like Nha Trang beach , Da Lat highland, Phu Quoc Island, Hue, Hoi An ancient town, Ha Long Bay...

  6. If you go to Hue, you're going to freak out because of their accents. Funny and not understandable. Even a true Vietnamese would have hard times understanding what the Hue residential people are saying.

  7. Makong Delta.  Very neat place, and a great experience.  you can eat Cobras on one of the islands on the tour.
