  1. Of course.  It's just an incision to give the baby a bit more space when it's coming out.  The doctor stitches it up afterwards and it heals.  I've had 2 kids and had it done both times.

  2. Yes ,of course.

  3. Yes. I have had one for both of my children. I am due in Nov and am expecting it to happen again.

  4. I had one with my first and second, but not my third.

  5. You can always get one, but most doctors don't do them or recommend them anymore.

Basically, the procedure became virtually routine, despite limited data on all of the possible adverse consequences including extension to a 3rd or 4th degree tear, and different dysfunctions. Now they recommend "restricted" use of episiotomies as opposed to "routine" use because research has provided no evidence to support many of the reasons that the procedure originally became so widespread.

"Current data and clinical opinion suggest that there are insufficient objective evidence-based criteria to recommend episiotomy, and especially routine use of episiotomy, and that clinical judgment remains the best guide for use of this procedure," the authors write. "Restrictive use of episiotomy appears to reduce the likelihood of perineal lacerations."

    Here's an article on it
