If you had only 4 hrs in Venice, where would u go? which are the places that you just can't miss?

i am going in may and im only passing through venice (can't afford a night there so moving on to florence) but i want to see 2 or 3 highlights, is this possible? which are these important places? is venice a walkable city? i would be arriving to marco polo airport, please give me suggestions if you live/traveled there, thanx!

Don´t worry you´ll see Venice in 4 hrs, it´s not too big and you´ll have enough time to enjoy a coffe in "Piazza San Marco" (note; try to save some money for the coffe, it´s a bit expensive but it´s worth while) perfectly walkable.

Venice is a very walkable city.  You would have to take a cab from the airport to a water taxi stand, then take the water taxi to the city.  

For a 4-hour tour:

Venice's most famous site is St. Mark's square, and there are a few don't-miss things there:

St. Mark's (or San Marco) church.  It is beautiful inside, and the mosaic floors are quite remarkable.

Go up in the Campanile (which is right in front of St. Mark's).  It offers a bird's-eye-view of Venice.

Doge's Palace

Walk the waterfront by the Doge's palace for some good people-watching and fun statues (the one of Casanova is interesting).

Rialto Bridge - you will recognize it when you see it - it spans the Grand Canal and is filled with shops.  You can get some good deals on Murano Glass.

you must go to san marco square, i was awe struck.  there is also the first jewish ghetto there, its kinda hard to find your way through, the roads are very confusing.  but san marco square is amazing.

San Marco Square isn't bad, but there are a lot of museum and nice square too, like Santo Stefano square, Palazzo Franchetti museum, Ca'Doro museum, a island of Murano (when they produce the glass). The name of canal il Canal Grande (big canal) and there are a lot waterbus. I don't like watertaxi because they are very expensive. If u want to enjoy the night you can go to Casinò of Venice or in the chouch near Santo Stefano Square when there are a lot of show. If u want to eat you can go to a place called Zattere, there are a good restaurant, cheaper than other restaurant. The venezian  famous dish is Spaghetti alla Busara, whit scrimp and chili sause. I really like it! The Rialto bridge is nice but if u want to see the Canal Grande is better Accademia Bridge, is more easy, but is fantastic!   I live in italy and i went to venice a lot of time

Are you sure you can't afford a night there?  Try the Hotel Abbazia before you make a decision.  It's reasonalbe and very beautiful.  

Of course you have to see St. Mark's square.  Other than that just get lost.  Take the water taxi (which is supposed to cost money, but they don't check) and get off wherever!  You can walk the allies for ever seeing all types of things.  The people are lovely, there are tiny stores, piazzas and delicious food that will enthrall you.  Just make sure that you make it back to the grand canal in time.   Then you can take the water taxi back to the airport.

most definitely St. Marks Square! It is gorgeous. and also take a boat bus around the city. There is one canal, I forgot the name (it is really really famous), that you HAVE to see. =]]sorry that I forgot the name.

How can you even think to visit Venice, one of the most beautiful cities in the world (if not the most beautiful) in only 4 hours??? If you really have only 4 hours, don't even go there, you will regret it for your whole life! (Apart of the fact that Venice is 10.000 times better than Florence!)

Fortunately there are other solutions: of course Venice is very expensive, but you don't need to sleep there (you are not one of those silly tourists, aren't you?).  

Since Venice is very well connected by trains, and the train is the only way to quickly enter to the city, I suggest you to book your accomodation in one of the city close to it and connected with the railway, for example in Mestre, only 5 minutes by train, Padova, 15 minutes (east), Treviso, 15 minutes (north)... Those cities have all much more cheap hotels and are very nice places to visit also (don't forget to try the wine!!!). If you will arrive at the M. Polo airport, take the coach to Mestre (4,5 Euro, 25 mins.). The coach stops in front of the train station. From there you can reach Venice in 5 minutes by train or the city where you decided to stay.

Avoid taxi (very expensive) and any kind of ships (too slow).

When you will be in Venice, you will understand why it was worth it!!!! And don't worry: the main way to move there is by feet!

If you like beautiful, quaint places take the vaporetta (boats that serve as buses) to Burano, a fishing village on an island in the Laguna.  You don't want to miss Murano with it's world famous glass makers, although it's full of tourists.

take a gondela ride, it is the most romantic thing in the world. its expensive but its a lifetime oppertunity. if you are really on a budget just take the water taxis. there is a saint barried in the st. pauls square or whoevers square it is. you can go visit him but the line is long and there are lots of other chruches everywhere else. there are lots of piegons in the square and its full of tourist. perhaps just go into the local part? its cheaper. or buy one of their famous glass work pieces or mask.

san marco square is a must! Careful tho cuz if youre time is limited its easy to get lost.  

Someone mentioned a water taxi -- If you can afford one that is great but they cost A LOT!  The bus (which is a boat) is a lot cheaper......
