  1. Minority religions always make for a great ethnography.  Find a local Wiccan, Mormon, Muslim, Buddhism, etc group.

  2. I had to write an ethnography using participant observation in college.  I chose to do mine on the Goth/Emo subculture.  I went to a few clubs and interviewed people (with a casual approach).  I think my paper ended up being about 12 pages.  I went into detail about the symbolism of the clothing and music.  The professor loved it.  I'm not saying you should do the exact same thing, but subcultures are great for ethnographic projects.

  3. Ask the question on answers: "Why do you use answers?" And be sure to mention it is for a research project.

Then collect all the responses, and post a summary of the results on answers, asking what are the most logical groupings, or segments, of respondents. Ask follow up questions as necessary.

  4. Use a "Renaissance" approach or bridging between two separate fields of human knowledge by examining the ethnographic implications of cultural interference on one hand with science fiction's examinations of the subject on the other hand.  Star Trek's Prime Directive would certainly be one of three sci-fi examples you would include.  The TV series, "Alien Nation" and its examination of two cultures interacting on each other and coming to terms with conflicting stages of cultural development is another possibility.  And, Bradbury's Martian Chronicles" in which the cultural identity of people who became "Martians" was clearly going to be different from Earth human cultural indentities simply because the Martian environment and realities would impact uniquely on those people who lived in those conditions.
