i would buy a dell Vostro 1510

its £200 and hads 2gb of ram, and 120gb hard drive

then i would speck it up to a 4gb ram a tru bright screen, bluetooth, 5 in card reader

i would not be to concerned on what brand.  I would look for the biggest bang for the buck.  Visit tigerdirect.com and newegg.com and pick one laptop for each that you can afford and write it down.  then visit dell, lenovo, and hps websites and look for the outlet areas.  you might have to look under the business section.  find a laptops here and compare to the tiger and new egg prices

500 Euros is about 900 dollars. I would buy a refurbished MacBook with that because MacBooks are very good laptops, but since they're pricey, I would get one refurbished for that much.
