I was diagnosed with PCOS, but my period came June, July and August...

I was taking folic acid since June...was given Clomid for 5 days when my period came on in July, was taking Metformin for a month now...

Is it possible that my period is corrected by these meds?or is it possible that i'm naturally having regular periods now...i had periods every two months before...

Can folic acid help in the correcting of PCOS?

  1. The underlying cause of PCOS in most cases seems to be Insulin Resistance. With Insulin Resistance, the body becomes insensitive to the insulin it produces, which leads to elevated circulating levels of insulin. This in turn leads to hormonal imbalances such as increased testosterone and other androgens (male hormones).

The increased testosterone is responsible for many of the symptoms such as hair growth and abnormal menstrual cycles.

Elevated insulin also contributes to the formation of cysts in the ovaries in part due to the hormonal imbalances and also because the ovaries are highly sensitive to the influence of insulin. In women with PCOS, the ovaries are over-sensitized to insulin's effects.

Finally, the weight gain associated with PCOS is intricately related to Insulin Resistance. Losing weight helps to improve insulin sensitivity, and vice versa: becoming more sensitive to your insulin helps you to lose weight.

Women with PCOS may also find it more difficult to achieve pregnancy because of the hormonal changes (elevated testosterone and DHEA-S) and ovarian cysts that are characteristic of PCOS.

To answer your folic acid question, no, folic acid does not correct the cause of the problem with PCOS.  There is no one drug, supplement, or vitamin that will cure PCOS.  The only way to reverse the disorder is to reduce elevations in insulin which directly affect testosterone and other hormonal changes that are responsible for causing PCOS.

  2. its different for everyone, i have been told that folic acid can increase your chances of pregnancy so possibly improving your cycle. i have pcos and was told i couldnt have kids, my periods were a mess but i wasnt given any meds. eventually my periods sorted themselves out and after one month of trying i fell pregnant, so i guess in a way it can naturally sort itself out. the meds can increase your chances but usually its down to your particular body and when the times right. dont give up it will happen just be patient and dont let yourself get stressed by it. good luck.

  3. hey there , it all depends on your body I stopped taking clomid in june , and since then i have been having periods.... until this month of august that I was 2 weeks late , and that was bc my little bundle of  joy is on its way. Just dont think about it , relex bc it will happened.
