I want to be a medical scientist which would require me to have a Ph.D and I just wondered if that would make it so I would be addressed as Doctor?

  1. In general, the title is used in formal introductions but otherwise not. If it's that important to you, go for a combined MD/PhD.

  2. If you are in any kind of medical department and have a PH.D then I'm sure you will be addressed as Dr. ?

  3. Yep...PhD  Doctor of Philosophy

  4. Doctor in the sense that you have your doctorate degree, not doctor as a medical doctor that can practice medicine on human patients.

  5. Anyone with a PhD would be formally addressed as 'doctor'. However, it can be a little confusing in a medical situation, since people tend to assume that if you work in the medical field and have a PhD, you are a medical doctor. When I am introduced as "Dr x*x" or I put my name at the bottom of an email/letter etc, I try to make it clear that I am a biochemist, not a medic. I find it a little annoying, since in the UK the medics have mostly only done one degree and so the title 'doctor' for them is pretty much honorary, yet it's seen as somehow superior...
