  1. It happened to the brother of an ex-boyfriend of mine.  Two teenage brothers were wrestling and the dog (a shepherd mix) mistook it for a real fight and bit one of the boys in a very sensitive area and it required stitches.  Ouch!!!!!

It's important to know when the dog is getting anxious by what is happening and either remove the dog from the room or have the play fighting stop.

  2. Its a guarding breed and its instinct is to protect other members of its pack. Dogs read body language and a play fight to them looks no different than a real fight. When dogs play fight their body language is entirely difficult. If the kids are fighting and the dogs sees them as higher in the pack than him then it is unlikely he will join in but all dogs are different.

Rotties require calm firm handling their beautiful dogs and get bad press generally because they are taken into the wrong environment. Well done for doing your research but if your looking for a big dog good at guarding but with a more docile approach its well worth considering a Bullmastff they are much more reliable around rowdy children and are only likely to guard when an intruder enters your home (this doesnt apply to guests if you let someone in the dog will accept them)

  3. Generally not, if it's something he's accustomed to see, though you might want to keep an eye on him for signs of anxiety or stress.  If  you have not attempted to train him as a guard dog, he is less likely to do so.

In my opiniion, training territorial dogs to guard is like carrying coals to Newcastle, but more dangerous.  If you are their alpha, and they love you, they will be formidable enough with no guard training at all.

Because they are so very territorial and potentially aggressive, it is a good idea to watch him in such circumstances.  Just to be safe.

  4. Probably not if you have trained it correctly.

  5. no he would just want to play to and bring his rope toy...ha ha its so cute...oh yeah and we had him since he was a pup

  6. lol depend, if the one who you fighting against is someone the dog doesn't know, then probably haha, however if it's someone that come by a lot then probably not.

  7. it depends on the dog

    The way its been trained

The relationship it has with the people fighting

If it believes its owner is threatened

and its instincts some dogs have more of a protection instinct than others.

  8. Even if you are "play fighting" and the dog jumps in to "play fight, someone can really get hurt!  Don't tempt fate - you, the other person and the dog could all wind up with regrets!

  9. it depends he/she might bark first and if you really are hurt then yes maybe it will defend you.

  10. no it should play with you

    i had one

  11. i dont think they would as long as they have been trained correctly. if i pretend to attack my mam infront of my dog, she just gives me a funny look or jumps up and down

  12. My boyfriends lab mix does that. If you fake punch him in the arm the dog jumps up on you and barks.

  13. Most dogs will protect you if it thinks you are in danger. It's natural instinct. It doesn't matter when you got the dog, just their love and loyalty towards you. Chances are in a play fight it may just try and play as well...

  14. it might do, me and my boyfriend were messing around an my dog started barking at him, i think it just depends on how its trained

  15. i have friends with rotties and they say the dogs dont realy like play fighting and do look like their ready to protect their master.

    not in a nasty way,

most dogs will react in certain ways when their people play fight,

  16. Not all rottweilers have a protective instinct. Ours did but i have seen others that could care less about their owners. It depends on the animals personality. If you've had it since it was a puppy and it hasn't been very protective I wouldn't worry about it.
