  1. it's not called tall screen for a reason :P, that's the format the movie was shot in, stretching it north/south would mess the picture up or cut off the sides...


  2. All HD network broadcasts are exactly 16:9 ratio.

    But movies in the theater have at least 7 different ratios. It's not standardized.

    Your TV is displaying the DVD exactly like it was shown in the theater. Theaters used to have curtins that would move in/out and down to exactly frame the image.

    Your TV remote or the DVD player should have an "ASPECT" button you can press to try and zoom in and remove the black bars if they really bother you.

    But most of us movie lovers live with the empty space because we want to see the movie exactly like it was shown in the theater.

    It's your choice.
