  1. Practice on the sand hopping up from  laying down to being on your feet without resting on your knees.  Once you can do this find a beach with waves around thigh high.  To small and they are hard to catch,  to big and you will have a hard time paddling out.  The longer the board the more stable it will be and the easier it wil be to stand up as well as paddle.  Paddling out can be one of the hardest parts of surfing.  When a wave comes the easyist way to get out is to roll the board over and to pull the nose down under the water and brace the tail with your foot.  As the wave goes over push the nose up and out the back side of the wave.  As you get more comfortable you can learn to duck dive but for beginers the log roll is easier.   Once you get outside(past where the waves are breaking) practice sitting on the board.  When you see a wave coming you need to turn the board around.  Lean back on the board so that the nose comes up into the air and the tail sinks then spin the board so the nose points toward shore.  It takes practice to learn where you need to be to catch a wave so dont give up if get it wrong at first and get tumbled.  You want to catch the wave before it breaks instead of riding the white water.  If you end up in the white water you can still ride it and practice on it, but it isnt as good.  If you see a wave coming that you think you can catch paddle for all you are worth until you feel the board start to drop in.  When you feel that you need to hop to your feet (like you practiced on the beach) and ride the wave.  Make sure the nose stays just out of the water or you will "pearl" (nose dive)  Turns are made by gentely leaning.  You want to stay just in front of the white water.  You will want to practice away from crowded areas to keep from hitting anyone with your board.  Dont forget that if you let go of your board it can hit someone up to the distance of your board PLUS the distance of your leash.  Don't "snake" (cut off) another surfer.  The first person or the person closest to where the wave is breaking has dibs on that wave.  Usually you only share waves with friends and only then after you have learned to control your board so you dont hit them.  Lots of people don't stand up on thier first trip so don't get discouraged, it is worth the effort.

  2. Usually, the larger your board is the easier it is to stand.

    Malibu = Long Board

    Mini Malibu (Minimal) = mini long board

    etc.

    I suggest investing in a minimal, its perfect for almost all kind of conditions and the best kind of board to learn on.
