  1. Cartgena is very pretty and an historic treasure. Takes awhile to fly to Bogota and then another few hours to Cartegena.  Bring back Colombian chocolate (Santander) and aquardiente (check my spelling).  Don't use the beaches there, go to Isla De Rosario about 25 miles by boat off the coast.  See the old walled city and only use marked cabs.  Lots of good food, especially seafood.  I was there in January and it was about 85 degrees, but there is a constant sea breeze that makes it more comfortable

  2. 1) Time = It's depends of your airline and your conexions, but I can give you an estimate, it would take more than 6 hours (it's the time of fly Cartagena- Miami).

    2) mmm things that you could bring back.... maybe some "artesanias"  (Handiworks) an tradicional  hat (Sombrero Volteado)....

    3) A lot of sea food!!! but  also  you can find international food, so, dont worry, you will have many options!.

4)Because cartagena is close to ecuador line, the time is almost the same all year, I recommend to arrive on December-January or June-July.

  3. food is great dont worry about. you have to try the arroz con coco, it's really good. mmm yum i havent had it in years though since my mom moved back. :sob:  You might also want to visit San Andres y Providencia, they are islands off of colombia, touristy area.

a couple of things i can think of to bring back are gold and emeralds. it's all 18k ,and emeralds are mined in colombia so they are cheaper to buy there. have a great time!

  4. I don't know if there are direct flights to Cartagena, but a direct flight to Bogota is about 7 hours, and then an hour flight from Bogota to Cartagena.

I brought back antiques, leather goods, and art that is uniquely colombian.

Lots of seafood, barbecued meats, rice, beans, variety of salads and fruits.

There is no true summer and winter there, as we know it in the USA. It is hot and humid in Cartagena, with occasional rain.

  5. You would need to take a connecting flight in Miami or Huston.  From Los Angeles to Miami it takes 5 hours and from Miami to Cartagena it takes aprox 3 hours.  Or you can take a plane to Bogota and then take another flight to Cartagena (1 hour).

Cartagena is a wonderful city full of history, so you can bring back beautiful pictures, history knowledge, a great tan and then of course crafts, t-shirts, jewelry (emeralds, 18 k gold).

The food is Caribbean food; a lot of seafood, rice dishes, coconut dishes, fruit etc.  Try "arroz con coco" (coconut rice), "sancocho de pescado" (hearty fish soup), "arepa de huevo" (fried corn patty filled with egg), lobster, shrimp etc. These are typical dishes from the Atlantic coast of Colombia. Also try all kinds of fruit (papaya, mango, nispero, mamey etc).

Of course you will find burgers and club sandwiches every where anyway, but why eat what you already have at home?.

As far as weather goes, there is no summer or winter, Cartagena is at sea level just above the equator, so there's only dry and rainy seasons.  However, in December and January it is a little less hot because it very windy and the ocean has strong currents.  April through June and then October through late November are the rainy seasons (it usually rains in the afternoon).  It is hot 90-100 F and humid yearlong, take lots of shorts.  You don't have to worry about huricanes because they never make it that far down.
