  1. it can be a disease, like already mentioned - bipolar disorder, etc.

but many times its the persons attitude that causes it. like if you'r an anti-social person who sulks in the corner and thinks negatively, your probablity of getting depression is much greater.

if your life is balanced- socially, emotionally, physically, spiritually, then your chances are less.

if you dont discuss your problems they can get you really down. Sharing your emotions is very necessary.

I have observed that people who are social tend to get depressed much less.

Also, people who are unemployed, or have excessive time on their hands are more vulnerable.

  2. It kinda just happens, my sister is clinically depressed and there was no real reason for it

  3. Yeah I'm 16 and I have psychotic depression which is slightly more severe, but yeah I'm pretty sure I got it from my dad who has bipolar disorder.

My illness was triggered off by psychological trauma.

Edit: by the way it's not 'brain chemicals' it's brain structure, hence the reason why anti-depressants don't cure your problems.

techie_gal, you've got it all wrong. You don't "just get depression" like a cold. Everybody gets depressed time to time, what makes major depression so severe is its severity and duration.

  4. My depression is caused from lifelong stress.  I was born physically handicapped. I also experienced abuse growing up.  I never had very good feelings about myself. These are the seeds that can grow into severe depression.

  5. Clinical depression can have many causes. Certain negative experience (like the loss of a friend or relative) but there are also real fysical effects like an inbalance in your hormones.

Always consult a physician when in doubt. There are cures and most people get over their depression.

  6. Yes, it is a chemical imbalance. It is most often hereditary.

  7. could be both ways. Something could cause you to fall in too depression, but you could also see everything depresingly because the disease has effected your veiw on life.

  8. it jus happens down dump all time low

  9. some people say it is due to a chemical imbalance in your brain.

  10. i guess technically it is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain.

  11. It's down to brain chemicals and their balance which everything you do affects.  So yes it does 'just happen' but as w. other mental illnesses the environment and your interaction w. it makes a huge difference.

  12. When someone is clinically depressed it is thought that they have a chemical imbalance in the brain. However, there are different reasons WHY the chemical imbalance occurs. It can be due to certain events in a persons life, hereditary or just happens! I don't believe there is any conclusive studies as to why.
