My focus would be to "stay close to home" at the same time really letting go.  

Philanthropy can so easily become diluted to non-effectiveness.

If I was advising someone else, I would recommend that they focus on their personal passions and their circles of connection and reach.  Perhaps your interest is a homeless shelter for designer handbags in transition?  Your reach would be your circle of contacts both locally, in associations, and through the internet (bit reach with Yahoo!)

I have very little money but I donate regularly to areas of my concern . . . animals, rural infrastructure, environment, justice, spiritual development, and my greatest passion - maximizing positive effect in such a way that when the tide comes in all the boats go up.  

As much as the money, the affirmation that comes from support and interest keeps those on the front line going and focused.

If I was advising someone who simply wanted to hand over money, I would recommend the great work of the Salvation Army, struggling with the loss to bell ringers in consequence of debit cards, the Buck Animal Welfare Fund because they do such great work with every ounce of resource,

As for giving I believe in giving here at home in the USA!  I would help the elderly and children!  or abused women but mainly elderly and children.

I have started my own non profit to help Rural Oklahoma Seniors.  Because in the rural counties in Oklahoma there is not anyone or anything helping our Seniors!  Help with bills, food and meds.  So if you really want to help let me know!

I would personally contact a couple of poor families in third world countries, and make sure that the money goes directly to them and their children, ensuring that they go to school and support them until they graduate.
