Question:

If you increase the number of coils in an electric motor, does that mean you are increasing current?

Also, do you know why increasing the number of coils leads to greater output of the motor? If anyone understands electric motors, please help me, because my text book is just not helping. Thanks soo much!

  1. Increasing the number of coils in an electric motor decreases the current....for two primary reasons...

first you are using more copper wire which increases the resistance to the current  (ohms law I = E/R, R goes up I goes down)

Second you are increasing the Inductance (L) of the coil which increases the resistance (inductive reactance) to alternating current.

Increasing the number of coils increases the magnetic field leading to greater output of the motor.  Each coil acts as a magnet so as you add more coils you add more magnets.

  2. no

  3. Increasing the number of coils (windings) increases the strength of the magnetic field from that winding.

Increasing the current *through* the windings also increases the magnetic strength, but the number of windings and the current are 2 separate things.  You can do one (more windings), or you can do the other (increase the current), or you can do both, to get a stronger magnetic field.

Why does increasing the number of windings increase the motor strength???  It goes back to 2 laws of physics (that are related to one another.  The Biot-Savart law says the magnetic field strength is proportional to the current in a straight wire.... and Ampere's law, which says the same thing (only in a more generalized case of magnetic fields that would come from coiled wires and other shapes).  Just say "Ampere's law" for the 'why'.

A stronger magnetic field will make a stronger motor -- generally giving it more torque (depending on the exact *type* of motor -- but to explain that I have to get *really* technical, etc. etc.)
