If you jumped down a hole straight through the earth (forget the gravity and magma etc)?

If you jumped down, would you come out at the other side of the world feet first, therefore upside down?

Please no comments about gravitational force and the heat of the core etc - this is hypethetical.

  1. Your heaviest part would point down.  Of course I don't know if we do have a heavier direction.

    As you pass the center of the earth, you may rotate if your heavier part is on top.

    Then again, why does it  flip?  Does it do that in a vacuum?


  2. You have reduced your question to triviality.  Without gravity, you will not fall.  You will just float there at the entrance to the hole.  If you pushed yourself down to start, then you would travel with constant velocity per Newton's 3rd law.

    The traditional statement of this problem excludes the magma, air resistance, satan and all the other nasty stuff in the middle of the earth, but keeps gravity.  And the result is that you go into simple harmonic motion bobbing up and down from one side to the other.

    And to answer your actual question, unless you did a backflip halfway down, you would get to the other side oriented opposite the way you started.  So if you go in feet first (feet in), you'll exit feet first on the other side (head in).

    you don't change your stance, so yes, you arrive upside down.

    Think of a clock with hour lancet pointing midday: if you translate (without rotation) till 6, it would still point upwards: this is where your head is, and it is nearer the bottom of the clock

You wouldn't be able to with out gravity!  You would just float over the whole, or off into space!  But I know what you are trying to ask, and what ever you entered in the whole first would emerge first.  If you jumped in feet first your feet would show up first, so you would come out standing on your head!

  6. If the hole is narrow enough to prevent your body from changing position by bouncing off the sidewalls, then yes you would emerge feet first. You would then qualify to be an Austrailian since that is the normal physical orientation of people that live there.  :-}

  7. Short answer: You would not come out of the hole - you will just end up floating weightless in the middle of the earth.

    Explanation: To understand why, you must involve gravity (sorry to disappoint you). Basically, whatever part of the earth is BENEATH you will cause a force of gravity that attracts you to the earth. As you go lower and lower into the hole, there is less and less of the earth beneath you and hence gravity will decrease and decrease. At the centre of the earth, gravity will reach zero (since the entire earth is around you, not beneath you any more) so you'll just float there and, hypothetically, the only way to get out is to climb out of the hole, so YOU WILL COME OUT OF THE OTHER SIDE ARMS FIRST because you have to climb :-)

  9. i am afraid  that you have to include gravity.  If there were no gravity you would not fall down a hole...or anything at that matter.  You would simply float.  

    So we will have to include gravity.   The first thing that would is that since the earth is spinning you will bang into the sides of the shaft that you dug.  Ignoring that.

    You will fall until you pass the center at that point you will be flying upward due to your momentum.   You will come out feet first and then ignoring friction (and earth rotation) you will just oscillate back and forth.  Going all the way through, back and forth all the way through

  10. No, you would not reach the other side.

    After you passed the exact centre, the momentum would keep you going a little way - a few miles perhaps - but since you would then be going against gravity, ie away from the centre, you'd fall back towards the centre again, and after wobbling to and fro for a bit you'd eventually come to a halt in the exact middle of the tunnel.

    Answer:

    (Assuming no friction and ignoring the environmental factors):

    You will oscillate harmonically with a period of ~ 84 min.  Maximum acceleration = g = 9.8 m/s² at the surface.

    Amin = 0 at the center

    Vmax = 7949 m/s (about Mach 23!) at the center.

    The trick here is that once inside the earth, the formula g = GM/R² no longer holds.  The acceleration is given by g' = g*(y/R) where R is the radius of the earth and y is the distance from the center.  This is the well known formula for harmonic motion where a is opposite and proportional to the displacement from the center point.

    Side note:  The hole does not have to be straight down.  Any angle will do and the period remains 84 min.  The acceleration and velocity will then be proportional to the length of the hole compared to the max length.

  13. no because once you reach the center of the earth, you would step on the hard rock inner core.but if you really dug up a hole that goes through the other side of the earth, then you would be landing feet first...i just thought logically when i answered this one..hehhe
