An airplane stays in the air because the air pressure on the top of the wing is less than the pressure on the bottom. This creates a phenomenon called what?

  1. LIFT

  2. Lift.

What creates the low pressure on top is the Bernoulli principle which arises because of the Kutta-Zhukovsky theorem.

The Kutta condition says that when air flows off a sharp edge (like the trailing edge of a wing) it must do so in a straight line.  So if the trailing edge of the wing is pointed down, the air will flow down creating a down wash.

In order for the air to flow into a down wash, the air on top has to travel faster than the air on the bottom.  What causes this is called airflow circulation.  It is the theoretical circular motion of air around a wing (clockwise if the leading edge of the wing is to the left) which, when added to the free flowing air, explains the movement of air around the wing.

All of these things combine together to produce lift and each is an essential part.  The Kutta condition is required for airflow circulation, airflow circulation is required to use the Bernouli priciple, and the Bernoulli principle is required to use Issac Newton's third law of motion.

These effects can be achieved with curved, flat, or inverted airfoils with varying efficiencies.

  3. It sounds like the word you are looking for is "lift."  Lift is a phenomenon or an effect.

  4. Another way to try out Bernouli's principal it to hold out a strip of paper below your lower lip and blow. The paper will rise.

  5. It is called Bernoulli's principal.

You can demonstrate this phenomenon by holding two spoons back to back upder a running tap, the spoons will be drawn together like a magnet.

  6. it is due to "Bernouli's principal "

  7. Not a phenomenon. It's a principal.
