Hon... The man was obsessed with being buried alive and his work reflected that over and over again.  He was a dark artistic genius and his writing was his creative out let.  He worked through his fear and obsession through it.  Unfortunately I believe that his fear finally became too much for him as does happen sometimes for these types.  I love his writings... he was a pioneer in his genre.  

Controversial?   More so in his own time rather than now.  He was years ahead of others of his time.  I think that many in his own era thought of his writings as intellectual ramblings of a mad man.  Now we see his genius... but it took time for his true genius to become apparent.
