Question:

If you know your eye vision (like 20/32), how do you know what power of contact lenses you should wear?

I was prescribed soft eye contacts about 5 years ago with a -0.75 power. I dont know if my eyesight could've gotten weaker over the time, and before I do anything serious like driving, I want to make sure I have the right power. I'll go to the optometrist if I need to, but anything I can find out on my own?

  1. That is why you go to an ophthalmologist! They have the equipment and the training to figure all of that out for you.

  2. You don't need "perfect" vision for driving (although it helps) but you can go to BMV and take an eye test to make sure.  You don't need to wait until it's time to renew your drivers license...you can take the test anytime.

  3. Yeah. You need a new eye exam.  knowing your visual acuity does not have anything to do with what kind of RX you should have. It only tells us how far you need to stand to see the little lines on the chart clearly.

  4. You definitely need to go back to the eye doctor; it's a good idea to go at least once a year...so that the eye doctor can check the general health of your eyes, and see if your prescription has changed. There's not really a lot you can do on your own to figure out your eye power(s); that's something that it best left to the professionals.

You should be fine to drive as long as you can see pretty well, but you should still get to the eye doctor as soon as you can.
