  1. I was surprised to learn that corporal punishment is still being employed by some schools in the United States.   You can definitely have it written in the IEP that no corporal punishment be used.  You might also want to make sure that a behavior plan is in place to deal with any discipline issues.   We have a student in my class who has it written in his IEP that no physical restraint ever be used.  I work in a class with SED students, and we are all trained on correct CPI procedures.  We would only restrain a student when absolutely necessary for their safety or the safety of others. With this student, we must call police if there's ever cause to restrain.

I would ask for your schools written policy on disipline. They must have it written or it's not legal.  Also look for backup information on http://www.wrightslaw.com  Wrightslaw is an excellent resource for all matters regarding special education.  Here's a great link regarding disipline of special education students. http://www.wrightslaw.com/advoc/articles...

  2. I've never heard of anyone having this in an IEP, but yes you can have it written into the IEP plan  *IF* both the parents and school agree with this. If the school doesn't  agree, there is more the parent can do to really get this into the IEP plan.

Schools who allow corporal punishment can't do this without the parent signing a form agreeing to this. THis goes for ALL students and not just ones with an IEP.

Ask the school  to give you a copy of their corporal punishment policy. If they say there is none and/or say the parent does not have to sign a form agreeing to it, ask your state dept of education to see if the school is being honest.
