  1. No, once you contributed the maximum amount (either $5000 or $6000) for 2008 you can't put any more money into retirement account.  

    If you are receiving SDD and not working full time, your maximum retirement contribution is limited to the amount of your earned income.  

    If you are working and their is a company 401k, it is the best way to save more money for retirement.  Limits on 401k is a lot higher.

    The best way to shelter money from Medicare is actually putting your asset into irrevocable trust.  With a trust, you can also protect your home and other assets.
