Is your apartment payment not a deduction for your taxes at the end of the year? Will you have to pay money in for taxes or would you receive money back at the end of the year.

  1. Apartment rental is not a deduction for Federal Income Tax purposes.

Whether you get tax back or owe tax at the end of the year depends on your taxable income and the amount of tax that was withheld during the year.

  2. No, apartment rent is not deductible for federal income taxes, unless you use part of it for business purposes, and then it would be only the % of the rent that represents the portion of the apartment used for business purposes.  Some states do allow a rent deduction (Massachusetts for one allows a deduction up to 50% of $6,000 in rent paid). As far as paying in or getting back, that depends on what your tax liability is versus what you had for federal withholding or estimated payments paid.
