If you marry the same person in more than one state, will the second state KNOW that the cert isn't legal?

Question

I know that only the first marriage license/certificate a couple is issued will be filed legally.

However, here is my question: If a couple gets married in two different states (both with licenses and not just a ceremony) will the second state KNOW?

In other words, will a state not file the certificate until they've confirmed that you're not married anywhere else? or is it all on your honor?

(And I know you can have as many ceremonies as you want. I'm inquiring about the actual certificates and legal papers.)

You only do the paperwork once. For any other ceremony, it's considered a confirmation or affirmation of vows. They file the paperwork, you do something hinky, it's a Federal case, I think.

you would have to specify the previous marriage on the second license and they would consider it renewing your vows. otherwise when they did find out which eventually it would be caught, you could be pressed with criminal charges for providing falsified information on a government document! if you need two licenses for your guests sake just don't mail in the second one as it will eventually expire and become null and void. but to ensure the legality of your marriage defiantly disclose the first marriage to the second states marriage license issuing agency just to make sure because every state is different.

I would assume that the second state would know...

I have some friends who had a same s*x marriage and they had to have it in another state because it is not legal in our state, but because they were married in another state this one has to recognize it as a legal marriage.

Though I can not imagine why you would want to marry the same person in two different states and pay the extra money to get a license in both.
