they should have left a "we missed you" slip, if they did, call the number that is on it (or should be on it) and arrange for re-delivery

Other answer good. Here's more info:  They will attempt again the next BUSINESS day, and the next, for a total of 3.  There are exceptions, such as if the shipper contracts with FedEx for only 1 attempt.

The main exception is Home Delivery, which is the under-70-pound, residential division of FedEx Ground.  They operate Tuesday thru Saturday, so if they miss you Friday, expect a reattempt on Saturday, but if they miss you Sat. they will return on Tues. not Mon.
