  1. NO Spain is a contribution based echonomy, while on holiday you can get free medical treatment but one you take up residence you have to pay the equivilent of National insurance which is at the moment €260 per month. After 15 years you are then entitled to a full Spanish pension. Lots of people live here illegaly tho and if they fall ill pretend that they are on holiday it all depends on your morals

  2. Yes,I´m a Spanish citizen married to a British man. When he first came here he just had to use his E111 as a tourist. But if you live here, you have to pay taxes,so when you find a job they´ll give you a health number and a card.

  3. If you move to Spain and are in the social security system i.e. you pay taxes, you get free medical care on the Spanish version of the NHS. You only have to show them your social security number in a hospital for emergencies or apply for your medical card through your local "centro de salud".

  4. As others have said, you can use your E111 but if you live in Spain and you are from the UK you are entitled to free Spanish NHS treatment if you are over 65 years of age.

  5. Yes, it's an EU country and you can use the E111 .

    are you mooving to spain.?

    good luck :)

  6. Yes..

    Take care..

  7. DEPENDS WHAT CITIZENSHIP YOU HAVE

  8. The EHIC/E111 allows reciprocal emergency health care during temporary visits to other EU countries. Strictly speaking it is not a permanent entitlement nor a full entitlement to all treatments available under each nations state health care systems.

If you move to Spain and pay your taxes etc, then yes you will be entitled to full state health care

  9. I have lived in Spain 17 years. If you work and pay into the system you will be issued with a social security card which you have to take every time you go to the doctors etc, this shows you are are entitled to medical care. If you are in receipt of a British pension you are entitled to free care, as we are part of the EU. BUT this September any foreigner who is not one if those I detailed above will NOT get free medical assistance. It was recently reported that because Spain cannot afford to look after it's own people under this system, they have decided to STOP ALL treatment for foreigners, if say for instance, you are living here illegally or not in work. I think that is only fair. If you don't contribute, you don't get the benefits. That is what Britain should do too!!!!

The E111 is ONLY for use whilst on holiday and they will be checking after September! It's your call, honesty or not.

  10. Tourists are entitled to an E-111 which gives them the right to free healthcare in Spain for up to a year.

Away from home. Spain’s healthcare for UK nationals

If you are a UK national living in Spain you are not entitled to health care at UK expense. Neither are you entitled to non-emergency treatment in the UK if you are not ordinarily resident there.

Anyone who works in Spain for up to a year is entitled to form E128 if they continue to make national insurance contributions in the UK. This entitles them, and any dependants, to treatment for any condition.

Self-employed and setting up home in Spain

You must firstly obtain an NIE (foreigner identification number) from the police. This is not just used for healthcare in Spain any foreigners making Spain their home should get one. Also visit the tax office (hacienda) for an Alta Fiscal form.

Take these two documents to the nearest social security office where you will receive a social security number card entitling you to full medical cover.

Am I automatically entitled to healthcare in Spain if I am working?

When you make social security contribution you become entitled to benefits relating to healthcare in Spain. Your employer will deduct social security contributions from your salary.

A social security number card can be obtained from the local social security office. This should then be presented at the local medical centre (ambulatorio). With this you have access to standard health treatment and drugs to treat work-related accidents or illnesses are free. Otherwise you must pay 40%.

Students with a temporary home in Spain

If your studies are a compulsory component of a UK course then you are entitled to the full healthcare in Spain under form E128 for two years. The E128 will only be valid for up to one year if the studies are not compulsory and after that there will be no entitlement to non-emergency healthcare in Spain.

Pensioners setting up home in Spain

UK pensioners who have made Spain their home have the same healthcare rights as Spanish state pensioners. The UK pays Spain an annual lump sum per pensioner to cover their health costs.

To establish entitlement you must obtain form E121 in the UK and take it to the social security office along with their application for a residence card and passport. Pensioners and their dependents receive free medicine.

If you have taken early retirement you should consult your local social security office about medical cover before moving to Spain.

If you are retired then the proximity of properties to hospitals or clinics may be a concern when moving to Spain. The development of properties in areas of Spain such as the Costa del Sol has to some extent taken this into consideration.

You should think carefully about your current and future medical needs before deciding on a move to Spain. Properties for sale are to be found all over Spain and medical facilities should be as big a concern as price and property type.

Please also be aware that the healthcare in Spain does not cover the wide range of assistance pensioners may be used to in the UK. This, along with the distance from properties to hospitals and clinics, should be taken into consideration for pensioners hoping to set up home in Spain.

For tourists and non-residents, form EHIC (European Health Insurance Cover) has replaced the old E111. The form E111 is no longer valid. You can apply online at http://www.dh.gov.uk/travellers. Have a photocopy of your EHIC ready to show the doctor the original and hand in the copy. You will find lots of information on health for travellers on the site mentioned above.

Am I Entitled to Free Health Care?

Spain’s public health service is known as the Instituto Nacional de la Salud (INSALUD). If you make Spanish social security contributions via your employment or your business you and your family are entitled to the same free health care as a Spanish National. Once you register to pay Social Security, you will become a member of INSALUD. You will be provided with a social security card (tarjeta) and be assigned a doctor.

For more information on Social Security contact the Instituto Nacional de la Seguridad Social http://www.seg-social.es (there is a page available in English).

If you are an EU National and have made contributions to your home Social Security scheme for two years prior to your arrival in Spain, you may be entitled to public health cover in Spain for a limited period dating from your last payment at home. In order to qualify for this, you need to take Form E-106 (pick this up at your local Social Security branch) to the local provincial office of the Instituto Nacional de la Seguridad Social.

  11. NO you will NOT get FREE medical attention unless, you are injured in an accident or a tourist, even then the insurance company will pay for the treatment in the case of an accident,a tourist will be treated if you have the correct card which I beleive now is a 111EU, but you will still have to pay for any drugs which are prescribed to you.

If you are are resident here you must be registered with a doc, working/ paying into the system then you will get the equiv. services as the DHSS in the UK, depending on your status, you will still have to pay a percentage of the value of the drugs prescribed.

If you are an invalid/on benefits I am not sure what the system is?  you will need to check this out carefully if you are going to live here.

My mother is 84, we have been here 26 years, she was treated like a queen in hospital here, she had part of her colon removed almost two years ago, the aftercare service was exceptional, home nursing etc., I cannot fault it in anyway.

I am married to a spaniard have been so for 15 years, so I am included on his family medical card.

Before I married I had to pay a private medical insurance, as I was NOT working, therefore would have had to claim for any treatment on that insurance.

Dental treatment here can be very expensive, it is not in the DHSS system, but not knowing all about the dental system that you must also look into upon arrival, I have always paid up front when the need arose for a dentist, which luckily has NOT been often.

Hope this helps you a little.

  12. I doubt it.

  13. Yes, it's an EU country and you can use the E111 form available from a UK Post Office.
