as being defaulted once it's paid off..

Can't you ask that they take it off your credit report, I was told by the credit card company that it was illegal for them to do that. Of course my bs sensor went off. If you report it, you can take it off, correct?

  1. I've worked for some credit companies, and do now.  As long as what caused the account to go into default is legitimate then, paid off or not, its a legitimate mark on your credit for seven years.

UNLESS....you have no intention of ever having credit with this lender again, then you can request that the account be closed, and this should remove it from your credit report.

  2. It will show on your credit report as a paid collection for 7 years.

  3. Collection agencies will sometimes agree and remove what they reported. But no all will.  If you  settled the account with the original credit card company, they are very unlikely to remove the negative item.  They rely on the accuracy of credit reports.  It may even be part of their membership agreement to not remove accurate info.

In any case, if they refuse to remove the derogatory item, there's nothing you can do but wait out the 7 year reporting period.

Closing the account won't get an item removed either.  In fact, a defaulted account probably was closed by the creditor and charged off.

  4. If you want to know your credit score I suggest you check out this site. They offer it for free, along with your credit report.

  5. Go to freecreditreport.com, once you log on, you can check to see that card on your credit and then fill out the dispute form thats up there. They will investigate it. Also if you call the card company back, get the names of the people your talking to an ID numbers, an report them to the better business bureau. Also to stop you from being tempted to get more cards, use the opt out service so you wont get offers in the mail. 1-888-567-8688.
