I fail the isochromatic (Ishihara) plates, but passed the Farnsworth Lantern test. My question is do you need to retake the color vision test every 3 years for your FAA helicopter medical certification, or are you permanently okay to fly night / instrument once you pass the FALANT test once?

  1. A third class medical certificate is good for two years.  Your vision will be re-tested (along with everything else) when you get a new one.  If you fail a color vision test, you will be limited to daytime flight unless you can get a waiver.  Talk to your local FSDO for details.
