If you put a diamond in aroom full of oxygen, would the diamond degrade?

And turn into carbon dioxide? Just wondering cause dimond is the hardest thing on earth.

  1. Yes, but only if it is heated to a very high temperature in pure oxygen.

    Diamonds are pure carbon, so they can react to make CO2 gas and leave no noticeable ash or residue.


  2. The practical answer is "no". The kinetics of any such reaction are so slow, any change is not detectable in a lifetime (or a million years).

  3. Well there's no need for the carbon in a diamond to do anything except stay bonded. It's in a configuration where all of the valence shells of all of the atoms are full. Same thing with oxygen gas, which is really O2. Nothing would happen, unless you heated the room to a ludicrous temperature.

  4. Try it,but I think nothing would happen because it is bounded tighly
