If you put a speaker underwater would you hear it above water?

Forgetting that there is a small amount of power there which would not go too well with the water, I believe the density of the water would deaden the soundwaves...

Yes you could hear it if it is loud.  However, the sound  is greatly weakened by the high density of the water and the loss of sound energy passing through the water/air interface.
