If you put clothing in a donation box, where does it go?

I'm talking about the large metal donation boxes found in shopping center parking lots, usually painted white. Where do those donations go?

It should have the name of the organization on the side.  We have some around town for goodwill or safenest.  I wouldn't donate to a box that wasn't labeled.

If a donation is not used, it usually is sent to the dump.  Some of the better organizations donate or sell large blocks of clothing items to third world countries, for example, Deseret Industries.
