If you put someone on your car insurance, does it raise your premium?

I already paid my premium for the year. I will be away from home for a few months. I thought I should add my sister to my policy during those months because she will be taking care of the car. (We don't live at the same residence. She already has her own car. She'd probably just take my car out a few times for upkeep reasons only.)

Will my insurance company charge me extra? Is it worth mentioning it to them at all?

If she is older than you & has a clean driving record, it shouldn't cost you anything to add her.  Call your insurance company & find out what they say about it.  They may or may not need to add her, depending on how often she will drive it & where the vehicle is kept (at your house or at hers).  If they change the garage location of the vehicle, it could change the rate (up OR down) if in a different town.  If it is in the same town the rate shouldn't change.

Most likely since all you are really doing is storing your car there while you are gone you shouldn't have to add your sister.

But because insurance companies have different rules, I would suggest contacting your agent to make sure.

Also you might want to make sure that your insurance isn't set to renew while you are gone.  It would be unfortunate to come home and discover that your insurance has canceled because they billed you the renewal while you were out of town.
