I've been inspired by Sarah Palin's daughter Bristol. Bristol is a city in southeastern England. It got me thinking -- what other town names would make decent monikers for girls?

Here's a list I've compiled from researching Google maps. Which would you choose + do you think it's a good idea to name children after faraway towns? (I didn't include town names that are already used as given names, like Mildred and Helena -- but I wasn't sure about some of them).

Clancy (Montana, US)

Kamiah (Montana, US)

Sonora (Texas, US)

Simmler (California, US)

Vallejo (California, US)

Piercy (California, US)

Tanoak (tuh-noke?) (California, US)

Salyer (California, US)

Codette (Saskatchewan, CA)

Glaslyn (Saskatchewan, CA)

Tulliby (Saskatchewan, CA)

Mallaig (Alberta, CA)

Spedden (Alberta, CA)

Bellis (Alberta, CA)

Ceska (sess-ka?) (Germany)

Praha (Germany)

Ahlen (ah-LEN?) (Germany)

Lisieux (Liss-syoo) (France)

Chaunay (France)

Marmande (France)

Lalinde (France)

Cyanika (Rwanda)

Kanazi (Rwanda)

Kato (Rwanda)

Masisi (Democratic Republic of the Congo)

Isna (Egypt)

Namian (nam-ee-ahn?) (Myanmar/Burma)

Dacca (Bangladesh)

Staraya (Russia)

Leisi (Russia)

Anatye (Australia)

Tilpa (Australia)

Goschen (Australia)

Waverly (Nebraska, US)

Deline (Northwest Territories, CA)

Arviat (Northwest Territories, CA)

Illion (Quebec, CA)

  1. Waverly, Codette or Kamiah x

  2. LOVE Ceska. The rest are just too weird, and not in a good way.

  3. none.but mildred is nice.

  4. I really like Namian. I think it would actually be pretty cool to be named after a tow. But as long as you don't live in it.

  5. i like Kamiah, Ahlen, Leisi and Waverly. I think its okay to use a city's name for a child if it is easily pronounced and spelled.

  6. Sonora- the best on the list and not bad in it's own right.

  7. Salyer and Piercy

Some others Dayton, Denver, Aspen, Miami, Atlanta

I actually like the name Salyer.

  8. I dont think its a bad idea to name your children after towns or cities. Infact, I love the names Brooklyn, Madison, Austin &Cheyanne, they are also names of cities. And I love the name Kamiah from your list.

  9. omg. i lovee the name Waverly!

    It sounds so pretty. lol.

  10. WAVERLY

    Glaslyn

    Chaunay

  11. To be honest I am not really fond of any of them, sorry.

BUT, if I had to chose I would chose either Waverly or Marmande.

  12. I really liked the name Paris before I was savvy to Paris Hilton and her disgusting antics. I loved that name because I've always wanted to go to Paris, my room is decorated with drawings and paintings of the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre.

Sydney is also cute for a girl, and pays homage to the land down under. Alexandria is a port city in Egypt. I love that name. So I can't say naming a child after a city is a horrible trend. Chandler, Madison, Cheyenne, and Brooklyn are also very popular!

If I had to chose a name from your list, though (which is very difficult!), I'd have to choose Codette and call her Cody.

    Difficult question!

  13. Codette.  I think it's the prettiest name wise for a girl.

I probably wouldn't name my own child after a town, but there are some unique names out there that could work and could be considered.

  14. Namian (nam-ee-ahn?) (Myanmar/Burma)

This one I would choice. But I would want to name my daughter Nia

  15. I like the name Kamiah and Staraya.  But some of them are a far reach.

  16. Waverly or Leisi

  17. I like Kamiah, but you should research the names further as they could have a meaning you do not want to attribute to a child.

  18. Bristol is also a city in Virginia and Tennessee...they split the state line.

  19. Sonora sounds very cute and unique. I also like Waverly. For city names maybe Brooklyn or Sidney? I really don't like naming children after cities. They may ask their parents "Where did I get my name?"  The parents say "Oh it is after a city we went to." There is no significant meaning to the name. If I named my child after places I loved, their names would end up being Hawaii, Florida, New York, Europe, and Mexico. I think that I would rather not name my child after a place. Just my opinion, Hope I helped!

  20. Sonora.

  21. Sonora, Bellis, Staraya

I don't know if the rest of them sound enough like "names" for me to want to use them!

  22. Ceska:  "tse-skah"!!(the Germ. form) or "seh-skah"(to be more Amer.) or "tchay-ska" to be diminutive of Franceska  (It almost looks like a pet name for Franceska, doesn't it?)

    I picked it because

    1. It sounds like a real name

    2. It's cute!

    3. It's in Germany :)

  23. I like London

  24. How about Brooklynn, Avery, Addison, Cameron, Chandler, Emory, Egypt, Eden, Raleigh, Seabrook, Tennyson, Terrel, Trinity, Albany, Laurel, Madison, or Shelby?  These are all found in the United States.

  25. I think it quite common, i knew a girl named Coeur D'Alene from Coeur D'Alene, ID (they called her Cori for short)

  26. Ceska or  Leisi

  27. I think it's a cute idea as long as you don't go crazy with it. My top favorite.

    Codette

    Sonora.

    Namian

    Kamiah

  28. Illion

Sorta like Ellion, which is a pretty girls name.

  29. I like Berlin for a girl, but maybe spelled Berlynn.

  30. I don't like Bristol - mostly because it is British slang for a woman's breast.

Although none of these town names really appeal to me, Sonora and Isna seem the least objectionable. Maybe Leisi as well.

I think Clancy, Piercy, Arviat and Illion sound more like boy's names.

  31. I like Ahlen..but maybe more for a middle name.
