  1. you need to do more than just ride. you need to eat right, hit the weight room, and ride. develop a plan that fits your lifestyle, and you're more likely to stick with it, rather than trying to change your lifestyle all at once!

  2. It takes years of dedicated cycling to get killer legs.   You may notice a difference in a few weeks if you challenge your leg muscles several times a week on your bike.  Just idly pedalling around town will have very little effect.

  3. i think its 3X as much as you would run

so if you run 2 miles you have to bike 6 and so on

  4. How many calories you burn depends on your body weight and how much effort you are putting in. This chart will is excellent for figuring out what you're burning.

  5. my gf's legs are getting really nice to look at from cycling (about 50-75 miles a week).  she says mine look really muscular when she's behind me and i'm pedaling hard.

As to losing weight, you can definitely lose weight cycling (or with any activity that induces you to burn more calories each day).  The rule of thumb is that for a moderate to hard effort you will burn about .25 calories per pound per mile.  So a 200 pound cyclist will burn around 50 calories per mile.  A 20 mile ride would be 1000 calories.  This is in line (roughly) with other forms of exercise, with the added advantage that since cycling is non-weight bearing you'll have less join pains and once you get used to it can cycle 20+ miles every day.

Keep in mind if you start biking for long periods of time to drink at least 1 bottle(24 oz) of liquid an hour.  if you are sweating a lot you'll need to get about half your liquid in the form of a sport drink to replace salt.  If you sweat (lose salt) and replace it with water (no salt) you'll eventually succumb to hyponatremia (which can be fatal).
