What you want is called optical character recognition or OCR for short. There are lots of programs to do this and you might have got one with your scanner software. I use omnipage.

Depends on the format you scan the document into. If it's a text document created with OCR (optical character reader), then you should be able to edit it with any text editor.

Most scanners create their files in graphics formats, like PDF, JPG or TIFF. Those cannot be changed in the manner you're thinking.

If you're just looking to make a written or typed letter "F" to an "A" just scan it in and use a paint program like Photoshop or PaintShop Pro.  You only need OCR software if you want to extract the text into real letters and numbers.

It's called OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software.  Even the best commercial one isn't perfect (is it a one or an oh?), but that's the kind of software that can convert a scanned image into text (and most of them do the scan from an icon on the toolbar, so you don't have to scan the paper with a separate program).  If you search for

Do you mean turn the images of characters into text?  That's optical character recognition (OCR) software.  Its come bundled with every scanner I've owned.  Google (or Yahoo) OCR and you'll surely find a number of choices.

Yea, it schould automatically scan into an OCR and you can copy it to any text editor. Counterfitting? Fake ID? whatcha up to there?
