If you shoot, say, a handgun, upside down (Grip facing upwards) will it recoil downwards?

  1. Quite simply, the answer to your question is yes.  I understand what you mean, and the answer is yes.


  2. The recoil is from the equal, but opposite force to the force that pushes the bullet out of the muzzle.  Key here is the word "opposite," which means the recoil will always be in the direction opposite to the direction the bullet is going.  Thus, you shoot downward and the recoil is upward (opposite to downward) for example.

  3. Draw an imaginary line along the barrel backwards, and it will recoil in that direction, exactly opposite to the path of the bullet. Your holding the grip will make it pivot, with the front of the gun pivoting away from the grip.

    So it makes no difference how you hold it, the recoil is always in the same direction, relative to the gun.
