Please enlighten me on what they find essential when accepting students (I wish to study either Journalism, English Literature or Creative Writing). What GPA does one need, any school activities I should attend in high school? Also, I am a citizen of the USA (lived there for 7 years) but I was born and am currently living in a foreign European country, where I am attending high school and will be staying here until graduation. Would this in any way influence their decision in accepting me? Please, give me as much information as you can. Thank you.

  1. Because you are a US citizen, you will not need to apply as an international student, which is good, because there are usually fewer spots available for international students than for domestic students. In addition, because you're a US citizen, you will be able to apply for more types of financial aid than international students can. Also good.

Your international background will look good on your application, though, so that's in your favor.

In terms of activities, I'd like you to get involved with activities/clubs that have something to do with your interests. It could mean that you work on the school newspaper, or the yearbook, or the literary journal. You could cover local events for your town's newspaper. All sorts of things. You could also, in addition to that, do things that don't relate directly to your future studies - sport, chess club, volunteer work, part-time job, karate, drama, what have you. But whatever you do, do it with depth and focus. There is no need to do a lot of extra curriculars, if you do the ones you pick with some passion.

The average GPA of students admitted to NYU is around a 3.5 out of 4.0. If yours is lower than that, you might still get in if the rest of your application is quite strong.

You will need to take the SAT exams. You can look up the average SAT scores for NYU at www.collegeboard.com.

  2. NYU wants an A/B+ average and about 2000 on the SAT. The biggest problem for most is expense. It's one of the most expensive colleges in the US and gives poor financial aid.
