It is likely that they don't have a train stop right on the boarder so technically you get in before they check your passport or maybe they check it before you cross the border but I don't see how.

  1. Yes, they will check for ID.  It is the policy of the US Homeland Security to check all IDs at all border crossing points.

For Amtrak you will need either a valid passport or birth certificate and government issued id (Driver's License) when you make your reservation and when you board the train.  Some trains make stops at the border where you may be asked to provide ID.  Some may ask you to provide proof of ID when disembarking at your destination.

Either way, even with ID and a ticket, Amtrak does not guarantee that you will be allowed access into either country.  In others words the host country may not let you get off the train or they will make you go back on the next available train. It is always up to the discretion of the host country.

FYI, there is a $6.00 (US) fee to cross the US/Canada border via Amtrak.

  2. well, you do no need a passport to ravel by land from u.s. to Canada and back...just birth certificate and photo i.d., ho , if you have a passport ,  you may use it.  see site below and scroll down to paragraph titled, " Other border crossings..."
