If you take a cruise ship to Alaska, what are the pros & cons of taking the inner route vs. the outer route?

  2. Assuming you are talking about 7 day cruising the main difference is speed, and therefore distance.

    Talking the'inside passage' gives you stunning views but because of navigational constraints you will be mostly limited northwards to glacier bay/juneau (assuming you are sailing from seattle).

    However, if you take the high speed run on the sea passage you will be able to reach much further north ( for example skagway or, my personal favorite place in alaska, hubbard glacier)

    The downside to the sea passage is you will get a sea day of not seeing much as the ship storms north (we usually then sail back to seattle via the inside passage via juneau) but then most ships these days are more than capable of keeping you entertained for that day

    It really falls down to what you want to see - both have stunning views (hubbard glacier and glacier bay stand out for special mention) so have a look at the itineraries and see what takes your fancy
