If you take a semester off of school, will colleges think badly about it?

Hello Everyone~

I had a question...

Right now me and my mom are in a financial slump (like many other people with this economy...) I can't even afford Community College, and I don't qualify for financial Aid... i cant even afford the payment plan the CC has to offer.

My question is, if I am forced to, would it look bad to colleges (I'm applying to one in Japan) if I took the semester off? I plan on working, studying for my SATs and taking Japanese classes at the CC (we have enough for that one class) during that time, and then applying (or trying to) get student loans(since I'll be 18 and can sign up for them myself).

I really don't know what to do, and I want to go to this university so badly, its been my dream for 7 years.

Please Help!!!

  2. I don't understand how you will afford a college in Japan with no financial aid if you can't afford a CC this year.  And if this college isn't in all English, you will NOT be able to deal with college in Japanese after one semester, let alone one year.  But otherwise, no it doesn't look bad to take a semester or even a year before starting college.  Are you sure you don't qualify for FA?  Have you applied?

I would check into something like AmeriCorps, which would offer you nine months of work experience and a $4,500 amount toward tuition.  It is great experience, and looks good on an application.  Good luck in pursuing your dream!
